Overview of project objectives and milestones

Details of the project to rebuild a section of Goodrington Road

Project details

These essential works to rebuild a section of Goodrington Road start on Monday 22 January 2024 and will take up to 12 weeks.

This means sections of Goodrington Road will be closed between Davies Avenue and Grange Road at the Dartmouth Road end.

The work will be in two phases to allow access to Palm Tree View for vehicles and deliveries.

Phase 1 - (coloured red on the map below) will be between Palm Tree View and Grange Road and will take up to seven weeks.

Phase 2 - (coloured black on the map below) will be between the entrance to the Beverley Bay Holiday Park and Palm Tree View and will take up to five weeks.

Additional resurfacing during these works is being funded by UK Government. This year we were awarded an extra £230,000 for local highways maintenance.

All you need to know

Roads affected

The diversion routes

Traffic will be diverted onto local roads. There will be signs marking the diversion route.

Reason for road closure

The road requires a full reconstruction. Contractors need to dig down almost half a metre (17inches) and remove the current road surface. They then must build it up again and apply the surface.

To allow for the works to take place safely the road needs to be under a 24-hour closure.

The closure will have an impact on residents accessing their properties. There will be no vehicle access to properties in the excavated sections during the works, including at night. There will always be pedestrian access.

Duration of the work

The works are due to start on Monday 22 January 2024 and will take up to 12 weeks to complete.

Alternative parking

Residents should park in nearby streets and comply with any restrictions.

Access for disabled people and their carers

Access to properties will be via footpaths only. Carers will need to park in nearby streets.

Waste and recycling collections

During the closure period, waste and recycling collections will remain the same. Residents should put their waste and recycling out on their normal collection days.

Delivery driver access

Access to properties will be via footpaths only. The site team may be able to help if the delivery is heavy.

Access to holiday parks

The project has been planned for the quietest time of the year to have the least impact on the holiday parks and they will always have full access.

Bus services

We have advised local bus service providers about the works. Before travelling, check travel information with individual providers.

Working hours

Work will take place between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

The team does not work later because the closest tip is on the outskirts of Plymouth and closes at 4pm. This means the last lorry will leave site at approximately 3pm. The team will then excavate enough material to load lorries the following morning.

The site team work Monday to Friday as the tip is not open at the weekends.

What happens to the old material

The old surface is removed and then recycled. The remaining material goes to the tip on the outskirts of Plymouth.

Who is completing the work

SWISCo are undertaking the work on behalf of us. Cormac Contracting Ltd are the sub-contractors.

If you have any questions about the works, please get in touch by emailing surfacing@cormacltd.co.uk

If there is an issue which is a threat to public safety, please phone 0300 1234 222 (24 hr) giving details of the location.

Safety advice

Please be aware of the following hazards while the work is taking place.

  • Uneven road surface where the old surface has been removed, and areas of deep excavation
  • Raised utility holes, gullies, and other service boxes
  • Varying kerb heights when stepping off the footway

The site will be appropriately risk assessed and have strict safeguarding measures in line with current Health and Safety and Public Health England guidance to ensure the safety of residents and workers.
