Driving is the most dangerous work activity that people do. It contributes to more accidental deaths and serious injuries than all other work-related activities.
Workers who rely on using the road to carry out their job not only face risks, but they can also create risks for everyone else on the road.
If you drive vehicles or ride a motorcycle, moped, scooter or bicycle on the road for work, you have a responsibility to:
- Ensure both you and your vehicle are prepared
- Check that your load is secured
- Make sure you are fit to drive
- Park considerately
- Never using a handheld device whilst driving
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates that ‘more than a quarter of all road traffic incidents may involve somebody who is driving as part of their work at the time’.
Further information on driving and riding safely for work for employers and employees can be found on the Health and Safety Executive website.
