Watercourses and streams are the responsibility of riparian owners. You are a riparian owner if a watercourse flows through the boundary or along the curtilage of your property.
Riparian owners have a duty to keep the watercourse clear of any obstruction and to ensure it flows correctly. At certain locations screens are located within open streams to prevent debris from entering and potentially blocking piped sections of streams (culverts) which flow through our land. These screens are checked and maintained on a regular basis by our contractor SWISCo. For information on specific locations that are regularly checked and cleaned, please call 01803 701316 or report online.
For advice on the risk of flooding from watercourses and rivers and the roles and responsibilities of riparian ownership please contact the Environment Agency Opens in a new window.
The Agency provide a 'Floodline', which is a 24 hour advice and information service for floods and flood warnings on 0345 988 1188.
