Don’t just waste it!
October is here, and with it Halloween!
Pumpkins are a major feature leading up to Halloween, and on Halloween night.
Each year more than 10 million pumpkins are grown in the UK, with at least 95% being sold with Halloween in mind.
Although pumpkins are great fun to carve and decorate, that is not their sole purpose.
Did you know the flesh and seeds are both edible and you can make some great recipies out of them.
So many pumpkins are purchased each year with nearly 18,000 tonnes ending in the bin when they could be repurposed or recycled.
Less waste, more space!
Hubbub and Recycle Devon have joined up to create #Eatyourpumpkin and have put together a variety of recipes from pumpkin pie ice cream to pumpkin wedges.
You can check out their recipes here. Pumpkin Rescue - Recycle Devon
Pumpkins have so many great qualities, they’re nutritious, cheap, mainly grown in the UK and can be used in a number of recipes.
What about the rest?
Pumpkins are also great for gardeners and can be composted at home. For details of our home composting equipment offer for Torbay residents please see Compost Bins - Getcomposting | Get your Council Compost Bin
The seeds from most store brought pumpkins will grow new pumpkin plants, but the new plants might not be ‘true’ to their variety and may fruit a different type of pumpkin to the original one. So why not save some of the seeds and grow your own pumpkins for next year?
For those who maybe don’t like pumpkins, or for what is left of the pumpkin, recycle it using your weekly food waste collection.
You can either chop it, bag it and put in your food waste bin, or place it whole on top of your food waste bin on your next collection.
Just remember to remove any candle or decorations first.
It is that easy!
