Tree Planting

Find out about our tree planting programme

New trees are being planted at a range of sites across the bay. This is part of our ongoing commitment to tackling climate change. It is also to improve the local environment.

Benefits of tree planting include:

  • improving air quality
  • helping keep our homes cool
  • provide timber, wood and fibre products
  • offer opportunities for people to reconnect with nature
  • provide spaces to improve health and wellbeing
  • help to reduce flood risk
  • reduce the costs of water treatment

Tree planting during 2021

Shiphay Avenue

We removed existing cabbage palms and replaced with 37 new Sweetgum trees. These are more sustainable and better for the local environment in the long term. Mitigation money received from the Torbay Hospital development funded the scheme. It was not from Council Tax or our revenue budget.

Riviera Way

Around 150 Giant Redwood were planted along the north side of Riveria Way. We planted some on our land and Cavanna Homes agreed we could plant 60 on its land.

Upton Park

Tree planting forms a key part of the improvements to Upton Park. There will also be enhancements to the park’s netball facility and lighting.

Climate emergency

Our Community and Corporate Plan outlines our plans to become a Carbon Neutral Council. We will work with others to create a carbon neutral community.

We have declared a climate emergency. We are a member of the Devon Climate Emergency Response Group (DCERG). This is a group of 25 influential:

  • public sector bodies
  • councils
  • business organisations

We are working together to reduce carbon emissions and create a Devon Carbon Plan.

Open spaces

Tree planting is one of the ways we are working to improve our parks and open spaces in Torbay. Find out more, including how you can get involved with your local open spaces.
