Apply to work on a protected tree

How to make an application to work on a tree that is in a conservation area or that has a tree preservation order.

You can use this application for works to trees subject to a tree preservation order (TPO). You can also use this form to notify us of proposed tree works within a conservation area.

In conservation areas, you must give notice for works to trees. It applies to those that have a trunk diameter of more than 75mm when measured at 1.5m from ground level. If reducing the number of trees is to benefit the growth of other trees, the diameter must be more than 100mm.

You must give six weeks’ notice before carrying out work on trees in a conservation area but are not subject of a TPO. This gives us an opportunity to consider whether an order is needed to protect the trees.

Before making an application please read the guidance notes.

For us to process the application, you must submit the following:

  • sketch plan showing location of all trees
  • a full clear specification of the planned works
  • a statement of reasons for the proposed work
  • any evidence to support your statement of reasons

Carrying out work on your tree

It is good practice to use a specialist qualified contractor to carry out the work. Work on the highway should be carried out safely and by tree surgeons. They should be qualified to work in accordance with the recommendations in Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual. There should be Public Liability Insurance cover in place for working on the highway for a value of £5 million.
