After last year’s smashing success, the Torbay on the Move Active Workplace Challenge is strutting its stuff again in March 2025. This fabulous initiative aims to get employees across Torbay moving more – whether it’s before, during, or after work hours.
It’s totally free for anyone aged over 18 working in Torbay. Just round up your colleagues, create a team of three to ten and track your steps on the app or website. Running, walking, and wheeling – which is the use of mobilities such as wheelchairs or mobility scooters – all count towards your daily steps.
This inclusive challenge runs from 3 to 31 March 2025, where teams will compete in ‘mini challenges’ for a chance to grab great prizes – and the title of Torbay’s most active workplace.
Last year, 53 teams from 24 workplaces took part, logging a jaw-dropping 104,240,286 steps – that’s a whopping 72,432 kilometres or 45,007 miles! That’s like taking a trip around the globe twice. Leading the pack was The Unlikely Pilgrimage of SDC Library from South Devon College with an epic 4,526,613 steps.
Councillor Hayley Tranter, Torbay Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, Public Health and Inequalities, said: “We are delighted the Torbay workplace challenge is returning for a second year, and we’re excited to see how many businesses join in. Regular activity isn’t just great for your physical health; it boosts your mental wellbeing too.
“You’ll feel happier, less stressed, cut down on carbon emissions and it makes good financial sense. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to discover areas of Torbay you may never have seen and connect with your community and nature!
“It’s a healthy way to compete against or with colleagues. I enjoyed it last year and I’m determined to do even more steps this year.”
Throughout the four-week challenge, you can manually enter daily walking steps on the app or sync with a tracker and there is a handy convertor if you are doing this. Your team’s steps will be added together, and progress will be tracked.
This year, we’re shaking things up with a brand-new route that takes you on a virtual trek across Great Britain (starting from the top and making your way down), with some exciting South West pit stops in Barnstaple, Exeter, Okehampton, Torquay and Plymouth.
The challenge stretches a whopping 1,743 km, 1,083 miles, or 2,542,300 steps – let’s see how far your team can go in March.
The Torbay on the Move Active Workplace Challenge is your ticket to ditch the car for a more active commute, switch up those office meetings for walking chats, or grab every break as an opportunity to get moving. It’s a fun way to engage with colleagues, and it’s absolutely FREE!
Active Devon is once again running the Workplace Challenge on behalf of Torbay Council's Torbay on the Move initiative.
