Due to Storm Darragh which is predicted to hit the UK this weekend with winds gusting up to 80mph and heavy rain, we are taking preventative actions.

As a result of this we are activating the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) for Friday 6 December and Saturday 7 December inclusive. Additional accommodation will be put in place for homeless people to protect people. We have an accurate picture of who is currently rough sleeping in Torbay and our Rough Sleeper Team are working hard to contact them and offer accommodation.

SWEP is only for those in an emergency when there are no other overnight options. If you see a rough sleeper, please report this to us by calling 01803 208723 or via the website and we will take action to protect them

SWISCo have confirmed that the Recycling Centre in Paignton will be closed on Saturday 7 December. The weather warning highlights significant risks, including danger to life from flying debris and potential power disruptions. Closing the site is essential to ensure the safety of both the public and staff.

Harbours are also taking preventative action, with Brixham trawler basin filling fast. Some vessels may be directed to Torquay Harbour for overflow berthing if Brixham reaches maximum capacity. Some vulnerable vessels in Brixham have been moved to safer locations. Checks are also being carried out on all berths within the Torquay Harbour Town Dock and Inner Dock, and boats are being tied down in Paignton. Everyone is also urged to avoid unnecessary risks and stay away from beaches and coastlines during the adverse weather conditions.

Other updates:

  • Unfortunately, the live music that was due to take place at Torquay Harbourside this weekend as part of the Bay of Lights has had to be cancelled due to the bad weather forecast. Other planned events may also be affected by the storm. The Alive with Light projections for Bay of Lights are also not being run on Friday 6 or Saturday 7 December. The organisers of Cockington Christmas Caper have confirmed they have had to postpone Saturday’s race for the safety of both runners and marshals. They are currently exploring alternative options and will be providing updates via their Facebook page.
  • Residents are also advised that due the storm forecast, and for the safety (due to damage from previous storm and risk of falling debris in another storm) of everyone the car park at Oldway will be closed all day from Friday 6 December to Monday 9 December inclusive. Access will be maintained for the Little Oldway care home which has its own car park.
  • Residents are also advised to keep away from any derelict buildings due to the potential for flying debris.
  • Some events planned for Sunday 8 December are still currently going ahead. The Christmas Artisan Market at Cockington Court is still going ahead from 11am – 4pm, and will take place inside the Sea Change studios, behind the Manor House. Pirate Grotto, also at Cockington Court is also still planned to take place, with slots available from 10am to 5pm. Find out more on the event webpage
