Important road works to improve a busy junction on Brixham Road at Paignton are due to start on Monday, 25 September 2023.
The main part of the project is to resurface the junction and approach roads at Wilkins Drive and Roselands Drive.
The highways works at the junction are scheduled to last three weeks.
During that period lane closures and diversions will be in place to allow the works to go ahead safely in phases.
The resurfacing work is needed to improve the junction so that the access roads and surrounding network can be adopted by the Highways Authority.
The works are being carried by specialist contractor JLES on behalf of the developers to fulfil planning conditions, at no cost to the Council.
We expect the traffic management during the works to result in longer journey times in the area.
We would therefore ask motorists to plan ahead and leave more time for your journey, especially during busy times.
We know there is never a good time for roadworks, and we have worked with everyone involved to minimise disruption while the necessary improvement works are carried out.
As a result, a separate planned scheme of works on Brixham Road, at the junctions with Long Road and Goodrington Road, will start later than originally planned.
That scheme is part of a programme to widen junctions and improve traffic flow needed because of the Inglewood development. It was originally scheduled to start on 25 September and is now due to start on Monday, 16 October.
Meanwhile at the A3022/A379 Windy Corner junction, a five-week programme of works to be carried out by Openreach is due to start as scheduled on Monday, 2 October.
This project is also connected to Inglewood and is to rebuild and lower a communications equipment chamber in the road. It is needed ahead of major works to add a new southbound lane at Windy Corner which are due to take place in mid-September 2024.
While traffic management for the works on Brixham Road this autumn and winter are likely to cause some delays especially at busy times, it is important to note that there will be no road closure at any point and Brixham will remain very much open for business as usual.
Updates about the Inglewood works are available on our website.
Programme of works at Roselands Drive/Wilkins Drive
Plan shows the diversion in place during the closure of Roselands Drive opposite Wilkins Drive
The works will start with traffic management installed on Monday, 25 September 2023.
The traffic lights at the junction will be switched off and replaced with temporary lights to manage the traffic flow.
For safety reasons, the pedestrian crossings at the junction will be closed and bus stops suspended.
The works will start on the Roselands Drive side of the junction, and Roselands Drive will be closed at that point while the work is completed. This phase is expected to last one week.
There will be a diversion route along Roselands Drive between Goodrington Road and Brixham Road opposite Asda.
The second phase will see the works switch to the other side of the junction at Wilkins Drive. It will be done in two parts and is expected to last two weeks.
During these works, Roselands Drive will be open at the junction and single-file traffic will be controlled by temporary lights.
While the work takes place on the carriageway from Wilkins Drive through the junction towards Paignton, there will be no left turn from Brixham Road into Wilkins Drive.
A diversion route will be in use along Roselands Drive to the junction on Brixham Road opposite Asda.
The second part of this phase will see the works area move to the other side of Wilkins Drive and the northbound approach to the junction.
The traffic lanes and diversion routes will change as the work progresses and will be clearly signposted for motorists to follow. Footway closures will be in place as the works move around the site.
