As part of our ongoing work to make Torbay's roads safer for all users, a trial road layout will be implemented on Browns Bridge Road at the roundabout junction with Condor Drive (The Willows, Torquay) to help pedestrians cross the road more safely.
The trial layout which is being implemented from Monday 31 July will move the kerb line, marked out using red and white barriers further out into the road to make pedestrians more visible to motorists.
If the trial is successful, the layout will be made more permanent. If the trial layout does not work the temporary barriers will be removed and another solution will be considered.
Research from Vision Zero South West shows that busy urban roads without adequate pedestrian facilities increases the likelihood of pedestrians being injured or killed while walking alongside or crossing the road.
This initiative is one of several road safety measures being rolled out across Torbay. Other initiatives include introducing 20mph zones around Torbay's schools and going into local primary schools to teach children about road safety with a specially designed fun and engaging workshop.
The trial layout will be in place for 8-weeks, during which time its effectiveness will be measured by SWISCo and TDA officers.
Cllr Chris Lewis, Cabinet Member for Place Services and Economic Growth at Torbay Council, said; "Providing safe crossing points for pedestrians play a crucial role in promoting road safety, especially as it makes them more visible to drivers and therefore minimises the potential for collisions and injuries. Safe crossing points also serve as reminder to motorists to exercise caution and slow their speed - especially in built up areas and around schools."
During the trial period, we would like to hear from pedestrians who use the crossing point to see if the measure makes a difference to their road crossing experience. Their feedback will also help to inform another solution to ensure the right measures are introduced that work for pedestrians and motorists.
Feedback can be left via https://yoursay.torbay.gov.uk/ the page will be live from Monday 31 July.
