Torbay Council has joined forces with South Devon College for the latest meeting to discuss its Torbay Racism Review on Monday 8th November.

Torbay residents are invited to join the meeting via Zoom and the panel will ask questions around the key line of enquiry, ‘How do we make Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic lives matter in Torbay?’

The meeting starts at 5pm and is open to all but please register in advance via the Torbay Council website.

Torbay Council has already held a number of meetings with other partners as part of the review, including Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue, Devon and Cornwall Police and many more. Local businesses and voluntary organisations have also been involved.

The Review was launched by Torbay Council in September 2020 following protests which started around the world in May 2020 after George Floyd died at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis, USA, including mass demonstrations in London and Bristol.

Councillor Jermaine Atiya-Alla who is leading the review for Torbay, said: “We are pleased to be meeting with partners at South Devon College to discuss what we can all do to help tackle racism in the Bay. We already have an excellent working relationship with the College and recently held our Climate Conversation event at the College so we look forward to building on this and seeing what we can do to improve equality in Torbay.”

Deputy Leader of Torbay Council Darren Cowell said: “As a Council we are absolutely committed to respecting equality and diversity and we want to understand more about how some of our communities here are disadvantaged, and what we can do to improve things here in the Bay.

“This is a holistic, inclusive and comprehensive approach to exploring the issue of racism in Torbay and our aim is to engage with the local community and allow them the space and time to voice their experiences and views to civic leaders and local and national decision makers.”
