On Tuesday 20 July, we announced our support to the ‘Bouncing Back to Sport’ weekend taking place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 July at Torquay Tennis Club.

Owing to increasing numbers of positive COVID-19 cases in the Bay, the organisers of the event have taken the difficult decision to postpone the event until further notice.

The main aim of the event was to promote health and wellbeing to the people of Torbay, but organisers felt that by going ahead with the event at this current time would be putting the health and wellbeing of all participants and groups at risk.

Cllr Mike Morey, Cabinet Member of Infrastructure, Environment and Culture, Torbay Council, said; “Whilst this is disappointing news to all those involved, it is the right decision given that we now have the highest rates of COVID-19 since the pandemic started. Torbay Council remain committed to supporting this event and look forward to being involved again when the time is right.”

Jim Parker, Chairman of Torbay Sport, said; “It is a huge shame for all the coaches, clubs and organisations involved and the incredibly hard work that has gone into the making of this event, but the tennis club has made the right decision. There is never a time when an organisation should put anyone at risk. This is a postponement, not a cancellation. We will make this happen when the time is right.”
