Whilst bus operators in Devon are getting ready to revert to their standard operational times for the National Concessionary Bus Pass, Torbay users will be able to continue with the unlimited use of their passes for a little longer.
Outside of Torbay, Friday 5 June will be the last day that National Bus Pass holders can use their passes before 9.30am in Devon.
In response to the coronavirus situation and in association with bus operators, Torbay Council temporarily lifted all time restrictions on bus passes. This was to allow older and disabled bus pass holders to access essential services and take advantage of the early opening arrangements offered by shops.
As we begin to emerge from the ‘lockdown’ and with the reopening of businesses we are expecting to see an increase in passenger numbers, particularly in the peak hours over the coming days and weeks.
In order to comply with public transport social distancing guidelines, bus capacity is going to be significantly reduced. Official advice is that you should only use public transport if you have to, and if you are able to do so should consider ‘active’ travel methods (walking or cycling).
Councillor Mike Morey, Cabinet Member for Environment, Infrastructure and Culture, Torbay Council said “After speaking with local operators, Torbay Council will continue to offer the anytime provision for bus pass holders for journeys taken within Torbay. This decision will be kept under review in-line with the impact of the re-opening of non-essential shops from 15 June. If you do have to use public transport, please consider if you can make your journey outside of peak hours, where possible we need to ensure there is capacity on the buses for those who need it most. Torbay Council has a series of resources available to help you walk and cycle around Torbay safely on its website: https://www.torbay.gov.uk/leisure-sports-and-community/sports/cycling/
Travel Torbay is your one stop destination for travel advice to keep you moving around Torbay.
Any passengers experiencing issues or problems when using their bus pass should call 01803 207766 or email buspass@torbay.gov.uk
If you need to carry out an essential journey on public transport, if you can you should wear a face covering as you will be coming into contact with people you do not normally meet. Whilst wearing a face covering does not protect you from catching the virus, if you are infected and are not yet showing symptoms it may provide some protection for others you come into contact with. Official guidance on staying safe outside your home can be found on the gov.uk website
You should not leave home if you or someone you live with has any of the following; a high temperature, a new continuous cough, a loss of or change to your sense of smell or taste. Check the NHS website if you have symptoms.
