Road works have got underway this week on the Brixham Road as TDA and Midas reach the next stage of developing a purpose-built manufacturing facility at Claylands in Paignton.

The development is funded by £2.04M of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’s Unlocking Growth Funding and an £8M investment in the site by Torbay Council.

Lane closures and traffic management will be in place for 17 weeks to enable the highway to be developed to provide a dedicated access to the site from Brixham Road.

Currently the inside lane is closed on the Brixham Road, Northbound from Yalberton Road to Claylands traffic lights.

Once this work is completed the traffic management will then move to the outside lane closure, Northbound on the same road in approximately 4-5 weeks.

Contractors have carried out risk assessments on carrying out their works by adhering to social distancing, in accordance with Government guidance regarding construction works.

Highways maintenance and planned infrastructure improvements are considered by Government to be an essential service. Authorities have been urged to continue with the planned improvements during the COVID-19 crisis where possible.

Councillor Swithin Long, Torbay Council Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Tourism and Housing, said: “It is great to see this project reach this important phase, while keeping everybody safe, to create a purpose-built manufacturing facility for a growing Torbay business. The Council, TDA and Midas are working hard to ensure that any impact from the global pandemic on this project is minimised as much as possible and the contractors have adapted how they work to follow Public Health England guidelines.

“Unfortunately some disruption on nearby roads is necessary and I would like to make a heartfelt apology in advance for any inconvenience these roadworks may cause, as I know some earlier roadworks have only recently finished. We know how frustrating it is to be caught in a traffic jam but hopefully these roadworks won’t have such a big impact on motorists during the lockdown period. The investment in our road infrastructure will pay huge dividends in the future in terms of positive economic development, and will benefit those residents living and working the area.”
