The next stage of the Western Corridor Highways widening scheme is set to begin in January.
Work started on Monday 15 January on a major Highways widening scheme on the A3022 Brixham Road between Clayland Cross and Wilkins Drive.
The £3 million scheme is being funded by the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership’s Growth Deal funding programme and will widen this section of Torbay’s Ring Road at Roselands. This will link to previously widened sections, creating two lanes in each direction along the length of Brixham Road from Tweenaway Cross to Kingsway Avenue. The scheme is part of the Council’s ‘Western Corridor Improvement’ which will see a total investment of around £11 million into this vital transport route.
The existing carriageway will be widened and resurfaced with adjacent retaining structures and there will be improvements to footways, cycleways and street lighting. The works are due to be completed in Spring 2019.
Executive Lead for Community Services, Councillor Robert Excell, said: “These works show our commitment to improving one of Torbay’s major routes, to reduce congestion and allow for future growth within this area.
“We have been successful in obtaining significant funding from the Local Enterprise Partnership and this scheme is the final phase of the current programme of works to improve sections of Brixham Road and Kings Ash Road. This will improve transport links for both residents and businesses and promote future economic growth.
“The scheme will however be a challenging one to implement and whilst everything will be done to minimise disruption to journeys, there will unfortunately be periods when delays will be unavoidable. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this will cause.”
Steve Hindley CBE DL, Chair of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership said: “At the start of 2018 it’s great to see yet another one of our Growth Deal projects being delivered in Torbay. The widening of Brixham Road is part of the Western Corridor scheme - one of the LEP’s portfolio of strategic infrastructure projects that will help to generate growth throughout the whole of Devon, Plymouth, Somerset and Torbay.
“I look forward to seeing the project take shape and start to open up the route to make it more efficient for businesses to thrive in the area.”
Torbay Council will be working with the Contractor ‘Dyer and Butler’ to minimise the disruption caused by the works although delays due to the construction work should be expected.
