Steve Darling

Find out more about this member of the Torquay Town Deal Board.

Steve Darling, the Liberal Democrat MP for Torbay since July 2024, has dedicated his life to serving the community he calls home. Raised in a B&B on Lymington Road, Steve has deep roots in Torbay and a profound understanding of its people and their aspirations.

Steve and his wife Mandy have raised their family in Torquay, where their two sons attended local schools. Their eldest now works as a medic at Torbay Hospital, while their youngest is pursuing university studies in Bath. Mandy, with over 30 years of service in the NHS, has given Steve firsthand insight into the challenges faced by healthcare workers and patients alike.

As someone registered blind due to Stargardt disease, Steve brings lived experience and a unique perspective on equality and diversity, particularly around disability. His guide dog, Jennie, is a constant companion and a symbol of his resilience and determination.

Steve’s public service journey spans nearly 30 years as a local councillor, including four years as Leader of Torbay Council. Under his leadership, the council was recognised as the "Most Improved Council of the Year" in April 2023. He also spent 18 years working as a caseworker for former Torbay MP Adrian Sanders, tackling local issues and advocating for the community.

Now, as an MP, Steve is focused on improving NHS services, addressing sewage dumping in Torbay, and supporting residents through the cost-of-living crisis. His relentless lobbying recently helped secure £20 million in funding over 10 years for Torquay, a testament to his commitment to the area.

Steve’s passion for Torbay drives his work in Westminster. He is determined to unite the community, set aside political differences, and emphasise all that makes Torbay great while tackling its challenges. For Steve, representing Torbay in Parliament is not just a role—it’s the culmination of a lifetime of dedication to his home and its people.
