St Kilda redevelopment

Information and updates about the redevelopment of the St Kilda former care home in Brixham

October 2024

Demolition is due to start in the week commencing Monday 21 October to take down the main buildings at St Kilda in Brixham, ahead of the construction of 23 new flats for social rent.

The removal of the empty accommodation at the former care home has been scheduled to take eight weeks and the listed house fronting Drew Street will be kept as it is.

People living in the area will see heavy machinery start to arrive at the site as contractors move in to carefully remove the structure.

This follows the safe removal of asbestos by a specialist team over the summer.

The demolition will be followed by the start of groundworks before Christmas, with construction due to begin in early 2025.

The new one and two-bedroom flats are due to be completed in Spring 2026 and will be available at social rent to households aged 55 and over.

Priority will be given to those with a local connection to Brixham.

The £5.7million project is being delivered by Torbay Council and is part-funded by a grant from Homes.

Summer 2024

Work started in the summer of 2024 on a long-awaited scheme to create new social housing in Brixham on the site of the former St Kilda care home.

It involves replacing the 1970s-built accommodation with 23 attractive and high quality one and two-bedroom flats.

The homes will be available at social rent to people aged 55 and over, with priority for those with a connection to Brixham.

The new three-storey building will be built to high standards of sustainability and in keeping with the Conservation Area.

It is scheduled to be completed in March 2026.

We have appointed Classic Builders (South West) Ltd to deliver the scheme and is using Devon-based consultancy Taylor Lewis to manage the contract delivery on its behalf.

The project is part of our commitment to deliver homes for households who are in need.

The £5.7million scheme is being part-funded by a grant from Homes England to deliver homes for social rent.
