Fire, smoke and carbon monoxide protection

Your safety guide for keeping your home safe.

Keeping your home safe from fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide is super important. Here’s some easy-to-understand advice to help you protect yourself and your loved ones.

1. Install Alarms

  • Smoke alarms: Put smoke alarms on every level of your home, especially in bedrooms and hallways. Test them every month to make sure they work.
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms: CO is a dangerous gas you can’t see or smell. Install CO alarms near bedrooms and on each level of your home.

2. Check your alarms regularly

  • Test monthly: Press the test button on your alarms every month.
  • Change batteries: Replace the batteries at least once a year, or when the alarm chirps.
  • Replace alarms: Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, and CO alarms every 5-7 years.

3. Prevent Fires

  • Kitchen safety: Never leave cooking unattended. Keep flammable items like towels away from the stove.
  • Electrical safety: Don’t overload sockets. Check cords for damage and replace them if needed.
  • Candles: Blow out candles before leaving a room. Better yet, use flameless candles.

4. Have a fire escape plan

  • Plan your escape: Know two ways out of every room. Practice your escape plan twice a year.
  • Meeting spot: Choose a safe place outside where everyone will meet in case of a fire.

5. Use fire extinguishers

  • Know how to use them: Remember P.A.S.S. – Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep side to side.
  • Place extinguishers: Keep them in the kitchen, garage, and near any fireplaces.

6. Be Aware of Carbon Monoxide

  • Ventilation: Make sure your home is well-ventilated. Don’t block vents or chimneys.
  • Appliances: Have your heating system, water heater, and any gas, oil, or coal-burning appliances serviced by a professional every year.
  • Never use indoors: Don’t use generators, grills, or camp stoves inside your home or garage.
