Tackling cardiovascular disease is a priority for the UK and for us locally in Torbay.
The NHS Long Term Plan identifies cardiovascular disease as the single biggest condition where lives can be saved by the NHS over the next 10 years. The Plan set an ambition to prevent over 150,000 heart attacks, strokes and cases of dementia. Although treatment of these conditions is very effective at preventing cardiovascular events, late diagnosis and under treatment is common. Therefore a key action for us all is to identify people early, before their condition is causing symptoms of disease.
In Torbay we are working to prevent disease where possible and to detect it early where we can. We also want to ensure those of us with heart disease are treated to the best standard (optimised) and know how to look after our hearts, so that symptoms are controlled and we can live active lives.
