Torbay Council recognises the environment as one of its key priorities and its responsibility to work towards a more sustainable future while maximising opportunities to improve access to educational facilities the quality of life in Torbay.
Leadership
- Help improve awareness of sustainable travel options in the community and encourage individuals to take responsibility for their own actions.
- Consistently consider the environmental implications and opportunities of policies, projects, decisions and working practices.
Transport and Travel
- Help and support school communities in the provision of cycle and scooter racks/pods.
- Reduce the need for fleet, work and school related travel and minimise the environmental impact of necessary trips.
Public transport
- Make the very best use of local public bus and train services and maximize the use of coach travel where appropriate.
- Encourage shared use where taxis are used.
- Encourage best travel practice amongst school communities.
Walking
- Promote walking to school and support the development of ‘walking buses’.
- Increase walking to school where appropriate in-line and increase activity in young people.
Cycling and Scooting
- Monitor, manage and promote the use of safe routes to school.
- Offer Bikeability Level 1-3 to all Torbay Primary Schools and develop access to Level 4 training.
Cars
- Reduce the demand for car travel where appropriate.
- Support and promote car share initiatives.
- Ensure all services minimise the risk of collisions.
Every young person in Torbay should be able to travel to school/college in a healthy, sustainable and safe way. Promoting sustainable modes of travel will help tackle the growing childhood obesity, and support independent mobility for young people.
