A carer

If someone living in your home is a live in carer and without them only one ‘adult’ lives there, you can apply for a 25 percent discount on your council tax.

A carer must:

• Live in the same home as the person they are caring for
• Provide care or support for at least 35 hours each week
• Not be caring for their husband, wife or partner
• Not be a parent caring for a child under 18

The person being cared for must be receiving one of the following:

• Attendance Allowance - lower rate and higher rate
• Disability Living Allowance – care component, middle and higher rate
• Personal Independence Payment – daily living component, standard and enhanced rate
• Constant Attendance Allowance – increased amount
• Disablement Pension – increased rate
• Armed Forces Independence Payment – any amount

You may not have to pay any council tax if you are a carer and have left your home because you have moved to provide care for someone.

To qualify:

• The property must be unoccupied and have been the main home of the carer immediately before moving to provide care
• The person must be being cared for because of old age, disablement, illness, alcohol or drug dependence or mental problems

We will need to see proof of the benefit received.

A care worker

If someone living in your home is a live in care worker and without them only one ‘adult’ lives there, you can apply for a 25 percent discount on your council tax.

A care worker must:

• Live in the property provided by their employer or the relevant body to carry out their duties
• Provide care or support on behalf of, or have been introduced by, a public body or charity
• Be employed to provide this care for at least 24 hours a week
• Be paid £44 or less per week
