We may be able to reduce the amount of council tax you have to pay if you have been in our care. This is also known as being 'looked after'. We do this by awarding a discretionary council tax discount.
Who will qualify
To get a reduction you must be:
- a care leaver in the care of Torbay Council for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14 and in care on your 16th birthday
- live in Torbay
- under 25 years old
- named on the council tax bill
The discount you will get:
- if you are the only person responsible for paying your bill, you will not have to pay any council tax
- if you are jointly liable, we will award the discount to cover your share of the bill
We calculate the amount of care leaver discount last. We do this after all other relevant discounts and exemptions have been applied.
How to apply
You don’t need to apply for this discount. We are told when you leave care and automatically award any discount due.
