The car can still be an important transport option. We want to provide choice in Torbay. Where possible we want to support the use of sustainable transport opportunities. Swapping out some car journeys can make a big difference to your wealth, health and the environment.

Electric Vehicles (EVs)

There have been improvements in EV technology in recent years. EV technology continues to improve with each new generation of vehicle.

Current models of EVs have significantly improved. They are now comparable to traditional vehicles in terms of:

  • driving distance
  • reliability
  • driver comfort

As an alternative to petrol or diesel vehicles, switching to an EV offers:

Electric Vehicle Charging

Owners of EVs need to be aware of a number of considerations such as:

  • the type of connection
  • various charging rates. For example, ultra rapid, rapid, fast and slow
  • how to access the charge point

Torbay car parks are beginning to have electric chargers installed. We are doing this through a project with partners at Devon County Council and Wenea.

Efficient Driving

Make small changes to your driving and become an efficient driver. You’ll use less fuel for every journey and save yourself money. If driving electric, you can extend the range for your journey.  Use the Energy Saving Trust resources to help you.

Traffic reports

Plan ahead and keep up to date with the latest traffic and travel news. This will help you avoid congestion and delays to your journey.

Cutting your car use

Journeys under five miles use more fuel per mile. If possible, leave the car at home for short distances. Try switching to walking, cycling, or the bus for some of your journeys, some of the time.  For longer distances consider the train options available from Paignton, Torquay and Torre.
