The Knowledge test

Find out what is required for the Knowledge test

Once you have submitted an application you will need to sit a knowledge test. A member of the Licensing Team will call you to arrange an appointment.

The knowledge test is an electronic test, comprising of 33 questions. The test is split into the following sections:

  • 4 questions on road signs/Highway Code legislation. You must score 4 out 4 in this section to pass.
  • 4 questions on basic maths (money) and general taxi knowledge. You must score 3 out of 4 in this section to pass.
  • 25 questions on places of interest in Torbay. You must score 20 out of 25 in this section to pass. Places of interest include road names where pubs, nightclubs, hotels, restaurants, police stations, holiday parks and supermarkets, etc. are located.

We advise applicants to familiarise themselves with the Torbay Council Hackney Carriage (Taxi) and Private Hire Policy This should be done before submitting an application, to ensure you meet the requirements to become a licensed driver, as well as before sitting a knowledge test.

If you fail the knowledge test you will be sent away and asked to re-book the test when you feel ready. You will be given 3 attempts to pass the knowledge test in total, but not all on the same day. There is an additional charge for the 2nd and 3rd attempt of the test, as this is not included in the application fee. If you fail on your 2nd and 3rd attempt your application will be closed and you cannot submit a new application for another 6 months. Please be aware that if you choose to resubmit you will be required to provide a new DBS and Medical Certificate.
