Register a food business

Find out how to register a food business in Torbay for free online.

Any premises in Torbay used to store, prepare, distribute or sell food must register with us. You must do this 28 days before opening so we can keep an up-to-date register and visit when we need to.

Types of businesses that need to register are:

  • restaurants
  • cafes
  • hotels
  • shops
  • canteens
  • market stalls
  • delivery vehicles
  • warehouses
  • mobile catering vans
  • businesses that only sell pre-packed food or drinks
  • businesses run from home

It is free to register your business.

Some food premises also need to apply for food premises approval:

  • fish processors
  • dairies
  • meat product manufacturers

Register a food business

What happens next?

We will add your business to the register. The register is public, but only lists the address and type of premises registered. We will not share your information with anyone else.

If you have not started to trade within 6 months we will take you off the register. If you decide you still want to trade after we have taken you off the register you will need to register your food business again. You must do this 28 days before opening.

Once you have registered we may visit your business without telling you. You can still trade before this as long as you have registered with us. We can also give you some advice before your inspection.
