Lease arrangements for Burton Academy

In 2018 the Council issued a remit to officers improve the learning environment at Burton Academy. Proposals to extend the accommodation were agreed on the understanding that the Council recompense lost outside play space by leasing an adjoining piece of Council land to the Academy. The building works are now complete and the lease for the Council land needs to be agreed.

Reason for inclusion in Forward Plan: To ensure vulnerable young people have the best opportunity to succeed To provide clarity and transparency to the lease arrangements To address and improve the external spaces available to the pupils attending Burton Academy

Key Risks: The extension is now complete reducing the Academy's external space; adversely affect the Academy if not re-provided as proposed CS has invested £1.5m into improving the accommodation which would not be fully realised without the additional external space Key service for vulnerable children will not have the security of a lease arrangement for much needed external play space The Council loses the opportunity to ensure the long term sustainability of the land; the service would take on the running and maintenance costs as the leaseholder
